FBA's 2019 EJ Workshop a success
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DeLand, Fla. -- The Florida Brownfields Association (FBA) hosted its annual Environmental Justice (EJ) Workshop on August 5-6, 2019 in DeLand, Fla. Approximately 45 brownfields professionals from around the state attended. The workshop theme was "Ensuring Environmental Justice and Equitable Development in an Opportunity Zone." Participants attended a networking dinner on Friday evening, and workshops all day Saturday. The keynote speaker was Sacoby Wilson from the Maryland Institute for Environmental Health. He spoke about environmental justice being a topic for everyone. Other speakers at the workshop included Dr. Sandra Whitehead, director of program and partnership development at the National Environmental Health Association, who spoke about health impact assessments, and Daphne Wilson, EPA Region 4, who spoke about galvanizing the EJ community. Participants discussed topics such as EJ gap investigations, current projects with successful outcomes, and leveraging opportunities. The mission was to help restore health and wealth to low income and minority communities located in Brownfields areas. FBA's EJ and Public Health Committee hosts the workshop annually. The next EJ Workshop will be August 3-4, 2020. The FBA is a non-profit, volunteer, service organization dedicated to advancing the cleanup, redevelopment, and re-use of Brownfields in Florida. Working in cooperation with state and federal agency partners, the FBA is a group of environmental stakeholders and professionals who provide Brownfields information, assistance, clean-up, and redevelopment strategies to communities and the public in the interest of cleaning up and redeveloping contaminated properties and revitalizing areas in Florida. ###
